Sounding Underground was presented last weekend in the Internet Auditoriums Symposium, along with Networked Migrations. The spaces that these two projects create can be understood as Internet Auditoriums. Here the abstract of the paper. In the symposium we were listening to Interconnected Auditoriums which create a space for collective listening, using the Internet or not, with and without wires; listening collectively to the body (in hammocks), listening to the cloud, listening to real-fiction in Berlin, listening to twitterscapes, listening to the dreams, listening to all abilities, listening to Brazil, listening to sounds of childhood, listening to the tiny movements of the Big Ben, to Venice, and to the musicality of the languages that is extracted from the non-sense. We also listened to the strike and the protest in Nantes against the construction of the Airport. Interconnected listening makes the nature of sounds migratory, do we travel with them?. Rich, ethereal, complex, fragile, metaphoric, poetic and politic auditoriums. A delicious time of learning in Nantes! Networked Migrations fue presentado el fin de semana pasado en el Symposium Internet Auditoriums, con Sounding Underground. Los espacios que estos dos proyectos crean pueden ser entendidos como Internet Auditoriums. Aqui esta el abstract de la presentación. En el Symposium escuchamos Auditorios Interconectados, los cuales crean espacio para la escucha colectiva, usando o no el Internet, con y sin cables; escuchando colectivamente al cuerpo (en hamacas), escuchando a la ‘cloud’, escuchando a ficción-realidad en Berlin y a twitterscapes, escuchando a los sueños, a todas las habilidades, escuchando a Brasil, y a los sonidos de la niñez; también a los sonidos imperceptibles del Big Ben, a Venezia, y a la musicalidad de los idiomas que se extrae del sin sentido. Escuchamos también a Nantes en huelga, en protesta por la construcción del aeropuerto. Escucha interconectada hace que la naturaleza de los sonidos se vuelva migratoria, viajamos con ellos?. Ricos, etéreos, complejos, frágiles, metafóricos, poéticos y políticos; así son estos auditorios. Un tiempo delicioso de aprendizaje en Nantes! Sounding Underground will have an installation at this event, and a presentation in the Open Platform, on November 27th, at 2:00pm.
Very interesting projects that invite us to reflect on place and the traces left, in memories, smiles, silences, all over the world. It would be a treat for those living or passing by Berlin.
Sounding Underground participated in the Media Active Festival on March 30th, 2011 at 7pm in Towson University’s Union!
“Sounding Underground: Listening, performing and transforming” was the paper given in the Annual International Conference of the Royal Geographical Society in London. The Session “Sonic Methods” organised by Michael Gallagher and Jonathan Prior, was a rich environment to share different methods that study our acoustic experiences and their cultural and artistic value. At the end of the day we had a one minute recording experiment with loop tapes. A real challenge!
The Theme of the conference was sustainability, and perhaps this last exercise proposed by Michael Gallagher, is a representation of old media and its degradation, the qualities of degradation and a technology that records just one minute making of it ephemeral in the recording but rich in the experience. If you just have one minute in a tape to record, what would you record?
This experience is so refreshing in this digital world where “memory” is a commodity, as regards machines, and our own “memory” can get lost in a (too much) over information. The importance of reflect, and listen to each moment as if it was the last minute available to listen…
Sounding Underground participated in the Festival Internacional de la Imagen organised by the Faculty of Design at the Universidad de Caldas in Manizales, Colombia. This is a great International event which I would like to attend personally next year. I felt proud of participating for the second time. First with the Interactive Sonic Environment – London, and this second year with Sounding Underground – London, Mexico and Paris.
The second and third rewarding presentations for “Sounding Underground” took place in Boston, MA, within the “Riders on the Train” exhibition curated by Nance Davies in Axiom Gallery. The Axiom Gallery is situated right on top of the Green St. station of the Bostonian metro “T” . The rumbling of the trains are heard and felt every five or ten minutes depending on the hour of the day. Cell phone pictures are the welcoming view from outside on the wall of the exhibition, divided by a video of meeting trains, go and return, created by Nance Davies. Interactive, audiovisual, video, photographic, graphic, text, and sound works bring the powerful experience of underground transport systems in one place, as perceived from artists from all over the world. On the 20th of November, I had the pleasure to participate of an artists’ talk where we had the chance to share our creation processes with the community. Personal motivations meet the political, social and symbolic contexts of these underground environments. This is a very rich and sensual exhibition that, if you have the good luck of being in Boston, and if you are or have been a commuter in public transportation… you must go!
Earlier in the day, I attended to the Studio for Interrelated Media at MASSart college to deliver a talk to students of Sound Art and Technology. I had a very enjoyable time listening to students talk about Boston’s commuting experiences, motivated by my talk about Sounding Underground and the experiences of London, Mexico DF and Paris commuters. The experience of listening to their commuting in Boston starts… and in a future it hopefully will be linked and accessed via Sounding Underground!

The first weeks of on-line life of “Sounding Underground” have been rewarding. I have had the opportunity to share the experience of its creation in three venues. The first one: Sound Ecologies: Listening to the City, event organised by Katharine Norman from the City University in London, and the independent artistic organisation Furtherfield. Sharing with other speakers, and attendants to the event was nourishing and positioned this experience as a networked experience that owes its value to the ethnographic and detail process behind it. Although the virtual Environment Sounding Underground is an important milestone there are many issues that will evolve for the contributors and audiences. It’s vital for the project to strength the networking technological options and strive for the participation of non-performers focusing amongst others, on aspects mentioned by Pedro Rebelo such as networked dramaturgia in improvisation activities on-line and off-line. Thanks to Katharine for organising such an important and enjoyable event! The work continues…

A talk about the project “Linking Urban Soundscapes via commuters’ memories” and an improvisation activity – resembling the one in México, took place in the CMMAS in Morelia-Michoacán, México. My colleague Ron Herrema, offered a concert with works of composers from the MTIRC, a partner from the IOCT, at DMU.
People were very enthusiastic with the activities. Sounds from the soundscape of Mexico City metro are not something completely detached from their experience, and they were immersed with it, voicing and playing with musical instruments. These interventions were an additional element for an improvisation planned for the use of the voice in the process of remembering (with Mexican commuters). This process becomes abstract and it enters in the recreation of a soundscape in a sort of Jazz ensemble. For these trained musicians the communication and the atmosphere was great. The interactive system was attractive and innovative for them. The soundscape, in many ocassions went to the background of our attention. The balance needed between listening and remembering is completely different when the remembering is done with musical instruments. The system then is flexible, the soundscape inspiring and provocative, and the intention of remembering probably needs to be agreed with participants, finding balance beetween musical instruments and the role of the voice. I just discovered this post by Anne Beaulieu as regards my visit to VKS Virtual Knowledge Studio, in Amsterdam, in November 5th, 2007. I am very grateful for her words, support and invitation and the way that she is perceiving my work. Thanks to all the VKS team for inviting me for a second time to share research findings.
I highlight here some of her words, (but is worth to read the whole post and the comments), which help me to reflect again on my work:
“Personally, I was again quite intrigued by the Ximena’s approach to fieldwork and to her installation (she had presented a small part of her project at the VE workshop last year). Her project to understand and represent experience are not based on brute force (obtaining thousands of sound samples) nor on appeals to authenticity of her observation as the all-knowing fieldworker. Rather, her way of working is highly iterative: gathering material in the company of respondents, talking to them at length, going back to them with the material gathered, reworking it, gathering once again the respondent’s reactions to the transformed material, making it part of her installation. All this work constructs a very rich version of experience that requires a lasting, growing research relationship, and one that draws beautifully on the reflexive potential of respondents. “
